Chad was born on October 25, 1961 to Joan and Curtis Smith in Minnesota. Chad graduated from the Lahser High School, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in the year 1980. He started learning to play drums when he was seven and then there was no going back. He wasn’t very good at studies but in his school band, he got high grades for great performance in music.
